Day 1
Following arrival in Austin, the group will begin a guided tour of the State Capitol Building to learn the history of Texas. Marvel at the grandeur of this structure that was completed in 1888 after seven years of labor! The Capitol has since undergone a $187 million renovation and restoration project, completed in 1995. Later, you will enjoy the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, which tells the "Story of Texas" through fact, myth and legend, and includes the Spirit of Texas Theater as well as three floors of exhibits.
Your tour of Austin will also take you to Congress Avenue and East Sixth Street, where the Governor's Mansion is located. A driving tour will allow you to view the mansion that has been the home of every Texas governor since 1856 and is the nation's fourth oldest mansion. Your time in Austin will conclude with a viewing of the Moonlight Towers. These cast iron, carbon arc lamps soar 165 feet into the sky and emit a moonlight glow. Austin is the only city in the world where these lamps remain, and seventeen of the original 31 lamps still stand as they did in 1895.
The group will head to San Antonio in the evening, stopping for dinner along the way before concluding the day with devotions at the hotel.
Day 2
This morning your group will begin its tour of San Antonio and exploration of the Alamo, a mission defended by a small Texan army against the troops of Mexican General Santa Anna in the fight for Texas’s independence. Around lunchtime, you will enjoy a riverboat cruise of Paseo del Rio, or “Riverwalk”, that was designed in 1939 as part of FDR’s Works Projects Administration. The group will also visit Mission San José, the largest and most fully restored of the region’s original five missions, and, time permitting, you may also have a chance to visit the Historic Market Square for Mexican souvenirs and snacks. In the late afternoon, it will be time to head home.
